Helping Kids Go Back to School

 

Those first day vibes are back as kids get ready to go back to school. Most of us growing up were fortunate enough to have our parents buy us all brand new things every school year – from a new backpack, pencil crayons, pencils, ruler, notebook, basketball and other school supplies. We were ready to show them off to all our friends.



However, there are many students across the country that aren’t blessed with those same feelings. That’s where YOU come in!

 

Help students in need as they go Back to School:

 

Penny Appeal Canada has launched our second annual Back to School program! I was honoured to go on CP24 to talk about the program. Last year, in our inaugural program, we were able to provide 3,000 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students in need in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and across Alberta. To recreate the shopping experience for students, we had pop-up shops for children and their families pick out the school supplies they wanted to take back to school with them, and give them that experience of having new school supplies as they return to school!

This year, we will be providing 3,000 backpacks to students in need once again across the GTA and Alberta. We’ve partnered with various school boards in these regions to identify the students that would benefit from this program, including the Toronto District School Board, Dufferin District School Board and Calgary Board of Education, among others!

When should Qurbani be carried out?

  The first point that we have to understand is that Qurbani (Udhiyah) is prescribed at a particular time just like salah/prayer is at a prescribed time. Fasting is prescribed in Ramadan. Hajj is prescribed at a specific time. Udhiyah is an act of worship that has a start and an end time. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا نَبْدَأُ مِنْ يَوْمِنَا هَذَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ، ثُمَّ نَرْجِعَ فَنَنْحَرَ، فَمَنْ فَعَلَ فَقَدْ أَصَابَ سُنَّتَنَا ‏”‏‏.‏ He said that “the first thing we do on this day is we pray, i.e. the prayer of Eid and then we return back then we perform our slaughter or sacrifice and whoever has done so, then they have followed my sunnah”.
