Helping Kids Go Back to School

  Those first day vibes are back as kids get ready to go back to school. Most of us growing up were fortunate enough to have our parents buy us all brand new things every school year – from a new backpack, pencil crayons, pencils, ruler, notebook, basketball and other school supplies. We were ready to show them off to all our friends. However, there are many students across the country that aren’t blessed with those same feelings. That’s where YOU come in!   Help students in need as they go Back to School:   Penny Appeal Canada has launched our second annual Back to School program! I was honoured to go on CP24 to talk about the program. Last year, in our inaugural program, we were able to provide 3,000 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students in need in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and across Alberta. To recreate the shopping experience for students, we had pop-up shops for children and their families pick out the school supplies they wanted...

The Worst Drought in 40 Years

  SOURCE: UNCIEF The Horn of Africa is experiencing their worst drought in 40 years. The most impacted regions are Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia. Across these regions, over 11.6 million people do not have access to clean drinking water and over 18 million people are facing severe food insecurity. The drought is expected to exacerbate the climate and hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. About 6.5 million children are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition and 1.8 million children with severe wasting. In Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, the drought has devastating consequences on the livelihood and well-being of families. Somalia There is a great concern for Somalia where malnutrition has reached critical levels and is at risk of experiencing a country-wide famine.
