What is the significance of Arafah?

The day of ‘Arafah falls right in the middle of Hajj. In fact, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Al-Hajj ‘Arafa” that the essence of the pilgrimage is the day of ‘Arafah. It is standing on that plane when the Hujjaj will be closer to Allah Subhanahu Wa’ta’ala than at any other time. It is the time of the responding of the Creator of the heavens and earth for the prayers. It is a purification being in that field and it’s also a time when the Prophet (s.a.w) addressed his companions and the world with the message that will stay to the day of judgement — of equality, of justice and of freedom. Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah is prescribed by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and he said to his companions and he said to Muslims to the day of Ressurection that fasting on ‘Arafah, it will make an expiation for the sins of the previous year and the coming year. So, it is a very important time to abstain for Allah Subhanahu Wa’ta’ala to come close to the Creator. The purification of the body, the purification o...

Benefits of Eating Dates in Islam

Dates are fruit of the date palm, fruit of the Prophet (ﷺ) and one important to Muslims around the world. Do you know why dates are so important in Islam? Dates or the date-palm are mentioned in the Qur’an 22 times, which is more than any other fruit tree, marking their importance. The Prophet (ﷺ) knew of their benefits, and enjoyed eating them. He fondly encouraged those around him to do the same. He would receive them as gifts, and share the benefits of eating dates in Islam with his ummah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said ,  “Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree.” Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree but felt shy to answer. The others then asked, “What is that tree, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” He replied, “It is the date-palm tree.” [Bukhari] When the Prophet (ﷺ) compared date-palms to Muslims, he was saying that the believer is st...

Helping Kids Go Back to School

Image
Those first day vibes are back as kids get ready to go back to school. Most of us growing up were fortunate enough to have our parents buy us all brand new things every school year – from a new backpack, pencil crayons, pencils, ruler, notebook, basketball and other school supplies. We were ready to show them off to all our friends. However, there are many students across the country that aren’t blessed with those same feelings. That’s where YOU come in!   Help students in need as they go Back to School:   Penny Appeal Canada has launched our second annual Back to School program! I was honoured to go on CP24 to talk about the program. Last year, in our inaugural program, we were able to provide 3,000 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students in need in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and across Alberta. To recreate the shopping experience for students, we had pop-up shops for children and their families pick out the school supplies they wanted...

The Worst Drought in 40 Years

Image
SOURCE: UNCIEF The Horn of Africa is experiencing their worst drought in 40 years. The most impacted regions are Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia. Across these regions, over 11.6 million people do not have access to clean drinking water and over 18 million people are facing severe food insecurity. The drought is expected to exacerbate the climate and hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. About 6.5 million children are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition and 1.8 million children with severe wasting. In Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, the drought has devastating consequences on the livelihood and well-being of families. Somalia There is a great concern for Somalia where malnutrition has reached critical levels and is at risk of experiencing a country-wide famine. Over 80% of its population is experiencing a severe drought which has provoked further crises in the region where many face resource-based conflict over diminishing resources, malnutrition, impoverishment, displacem...

When should Qurbani be carried out?

Image
The first point that we have to understand is that Qurbani (Udhiyah) is prescribed at a particular time just like salah/prayer is at a prescribed time. Fasting is prescribed in Ramadan. Hajj is prescribed at a specific time. Udhiyah is an act of worship that has a start and an end time. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا نَبْدَأُ مِنْ يَوْمِنَا هَذَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ، ثُمَّ نَرْجِعَ فَنَنْحَرَ، فَمَنْ فَعَلَ فَقَدْ أَصَابَ سُنَّتَنَا ‏”‏‏.‏ He said that “the first thing we do on this day is we pray, i.e. the prayer of Eid and then we return back then we perform our slaughter or sacrifice and whoever has done so, then they have followed my sunnah”. And so, performing the Udhiyah begins at the time after the prayer of Eid has taken place and the Prophet ( ﷺ ) said specifically: “whoever does it beforehand, it’s not accepted.” He said, وَمَنْ ذَبَحَ قَبْلَ Whoever has done their slaughter before this time, فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ لَحْمٌ عَجَّلَهُ لأَهْلِهِ All he has...

What is Qurbani?

Image
The Prophet (ﷺ) was once asked: “What is Qurbani?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: “It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim (AS). For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah (SWT).” [ Tirmidhi ] Qurbani is a sacrificial practice of an animal whose meat is distributed to those in need. Qurbani is compulsory for all Muslims to practice who meet the Zakat threshold. The religious duty to sacrifice a goat, sheep, cow or camel is in honour of our beloved Prophet Ibrahim’s (as) uncompromising devotion to Allah (swt). Prophet Ibrahim (as) dreamt Allah (swt) ordered him to sacrifice his son Ishmail (as). As an obedience and unrelenting faith, Prophet Ibrahim (as) prepared for the sacrifice of his son. The willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (as) to sacrifice his son Ishmail (as) as an act of obedience to Allah (swt) demonstrated his unrelenting faith. In his mercy, Allah (swt) spared Ismail (as), and a ram was sacrificed instead. In remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice, every Eid ...
