What is Qurbani?

Image
The Prophet (ﷺ) was once asked: “What is Qurbani?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: “It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim (AS). For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah (SWT).” [ Tirmidhi ] Qurbani is a sacrificial practice of an animal whose meat is distributed to those in need. Qurbani is compulsory for all Muslims to practice who meet the Zakat threshold. The religious duty to sacrifice a goat, sheep, cow or camel is in honour of our beloved Prophet Ibrahim’s (as) uncompromising devotion to Allah (swt). Prophet Ibrahim (as) dreamt Allah (swt) ordered him to sacrifice his son Ishmail (as). As an obedience and unrelenting faith, Prophet Ibrahim (as) prepared for the sacrifice of his son. The willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (as) to sacrifice his son Ishmail (as) as an act of obedience to Allah (swt) demonstrated his unrelenting faith. In his mercy, Allah (swt) spared Ismail (as), and a ram was sacrificed instead. In remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice, every Eid ...

Who has to do Qurbani, and where?

From an Islamic perspective Alhamdulillah, you know the Udhiyah/ Qurbani is something that the scholars consider to be a Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW), more specifically known as Sunnah Mu’akkadah. A sunnah that a person is able to perform or to carry out for themselves and their entire households and this can be done either by the mother or by the father or by someone in the household that has surplus wealth. Wealth that is not needed to be used to look after the families, so for example, if a father is the one who’s going to be carrying out the Udhiyah/Qurbani, then if not able to financially look after his family, then he’s not required to sacrifice the animal or have the animal sacrificed for his family. But if he is, then he can do that and it’s a Sunnah Mu’akkadah of the Prophet (SAW). Now can this be elsewhere or should it be done locally? It is preferred if it’s done locally, however, if there are people on earth or in other cities, other towns, other countries that are in...

Why are the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah important?

Image
Our Prophet Muhammad (S) taught us that the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are the most beloved days to Allah.  These are the days where Hajj is performed, where the Day of Arafah takes place, and it’s also the days where our Prophet (S) encouraged us to do righteous deeds. Some righteous deeds which we can do are to recite the Quran, increase in Adkhar, give in charity, and even strengthen the relationship with our families and friends.  The 10 days of Dhul Hijjah is an absolutely beautiful time for the believer to increase in reward and barakah Insha Allah.  Read more on what our TeamOrange says: https://www.pennyappeal.ca/blog/dhul-hijjah/

What is Qurbani and why do we do it?

Qurbani is what you slaughter for the sake of Allah. It is not for your own personal satisfaction, or for showing off to your family and friends. And it’s definitely not for you to post pictures and show off on social media. It’s what you do for the sake of Allah, and Allah alone. We do  Qurbani charity  to revive the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام and the second that these are the blessings of Allah ﷻ we share with our brothers and sisters, so it’s not just that you have it, it is to share it. The third is to understand that it is not your whims and desires even though the Sunnah is to sacrifice but you are doing it for the sake of Allah ﷻ to bless the people that dont have it. So we share the pleasures with everyone else around us and again declare that its for the sake of Allah ﷻ. Four is to understand that Allah ﷻ gave us the Udhiyah (qurbani) to slaughter to know that Allah ﷻ raises us above all, He created us for HIM and everything else for us. We ask Allah...

Are you allowed to use your Zakat or Sadaqah funds for Qurbani?

This is a very great and logical question I’ve been asked several times. It’s important for us to understand that the Qurbani Donation is a separate ritual altogether. It’s not an act of charity. It’s an actual act of Ibadah as instructed by Allah (SWT). So, when it comes to this particular act, the act of actually sacrificing an animal or delegating the sacrifice to someone is what is important and obviously, we see in this that the intent is Taqwa as Allah says,  “ لَن يَنالَ اللَّهَ لُحومُها وَلا دِماؤُها وَلٰكِن يَنالُهُ التَّقوىٰ مِنكُم“  (Quran – Surah Al-Hajj 22:37) …that the flesh and the blood of this animal is not going to reach Allah, it’s the consciousness that this sacrifice is for Allah that’s going to reach Allah (SWT) from us.  We have to understand that it’s not an act of charity – it’s an instruction that we are fulfilling of Allah (SWT) and therefore what we are going to use for the purchase of this animal are the extra funds (the surplu...
